Local newspapers are a great source of biographical information when researching your family's history. Most daily newspapers are indexed, so finding information is generally not a problem, especially if you can narrow search dates. You may be able to find articles written about an ancestor's career or special accomplishments. Obituaries tend to be the most common type of biographical source available in newspapers for genealogical research. But, they are also one of the richest sources of biographical information. An obituary often will yield information about birth place, career, and extended family members that is not readily available in other sources.
For South Central Kansas, the main local newspaper source is The Wichita Eagle, founded in 1872. You can search The Wichita Eagle through the electronic NewsBank database for issues beginning in Octover 1984. NewsBank is available at the Wichita Public Library or from home Internet using a library card. Older issues must be searched in print or CD-ROM indexes.
