Locating information about specific individuals who fought or otherwise served in the First World War can be a difficult process, even for the professionals. This is because there isn’t a comprehensive list of every soldier who was involved, like there are for more recent conflicts.
So, where can you look?
If you know what state your relations would have enlisted in, you’re already on your way. Try contacting that state’s archives and see if they can help you. Some states, like our native Missouri, have even made their service records available online for FREE!
The Missouri Digital Heritage site offers a search engine that allows you to search all service records from the State of Missouri (from the War of 1812 up through WWI) by name, unit, and conflict. These records typically include things like the soldier's name, rank, serial number, hometown, and either their date of birth or their age at the time of enlistment. For some of these records, you can even view a digital image of the original document!
