If your instructor told you to use “MLA style” and you don’t know where to start, come by the library and take a look at the MLA Handbook. Located with the ready-reference materials at the reference desk, the MLA Handbook includes information about how to get started with your research project, how to avoid plagiarism, how to use proper grammar, and how to cite your sources. The MLA Handbook includes examples of how to structure your English paper, and it includes annotated illustrations that show how to find information necessary for correct documentation. The Oxford American Writer’s Thesaurus
If you can’t find the right word to use in your paper, take a look at The Oxford American Writer’s Thesaurus. Dictionary of Literary Biography
Need information about an author for your English paper? Whether you’re writing a book review or a research paper, the Dictionary of Literary Biography (also known as the “DLB”) is a great resource for getting started with your paper. The DLB includes “bio-critical” entries about authors from all eras and genres, which means that entries provide you with both biographical information about the author’s lives and critical information about their works. The DLB includes a wide selection of canonical and noncanonical authors, so it’s sure to have the author you’re writing your paper about! Each author profile provides references for additional sources, making this a great place to start your research. The DLB is available in print in the reference section of the library, or you can access it online via the Literature Resource Center database.

Need to find an article for your research paper? Don’t know where to start? Take a look at the Essay and General Literature Index. The Index is available in print and online, so you can locate sources for your project from the comfort of your dorm room!
